New Adobe Groups - 615Flex is on it… So Join up!!

The new http://groups.adobe.com has been released. There are still some features they will be enabling over the next few months but for the most part it is pretty rock’n. They have a great discussion area, jobs section that we will be using very soon. Also an Events page that we will be posting all events to and they will be implementing an RSVP system for that which will be the bomb I am sure.

Up to this point we have really relying on google groups for the mailing list. The Forum / Discussion area of groups work in the same way that google groups works, with some really great added features that we have needed for a long time. You will have an archive of the posts at all times and you can subscribe to all posts so that you can get everything sent right to your email box if you would like. Also all other sections of the group can be subscribed to as well so you will get an email if a new Job is posted or events have been updated or added. I encourage all of you to subscribe to the goings on.

I would like to encourage that we move away from using the google group and use the new Discussion area on the new Adobe site. It has some features that you all will find very helpful for asking code questions like adding a file attachment to your post and code snippet area.

Boaz and I are already on the group so if you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Also one final not. Please fill out as much of your profile as possible. Would be great to see all the places we can hit  you guys up and learn more about what you are doing. Your profile on the groups.adobe.com site will allow you to post your blog, twitter, company site and so on.

Join 615Flex on groups.adobe.com

Scot Clausing will present at the next meeting. Here is a bit from Scot on what he will be covering.

3) Invalidation
Throughout) Hands on - Creating an interactive component

If you’ve ever wanted to create a component from scratch and didn’t know where to start, start here.?Ǭ† This isn’t going to be excessively technical - so bring your laptops, I’ll bring the beer, and we’ll have a good time.?Ǭ† See you there!

Beer will be served!

In an effort to serve the Flex community I “Matthew Wallace” will be doing my best to bring you guys some tasty beverages to the next few meetings. It it goes over well then we will do our best to keep at it.

As of this post….. the next meeting will be Building a CMS with Flex. Depending on who shows up we may or may not stick to this topic.

September 16- The Un-Meeting

Our fearless leader Matthew is not going to be around for this one. So I am just opening up the night to anyone who wants to stop by Remarkable Wit and talk shop, share what they’re working on, or just drink some beer. Starting up at 6:30pm.

Build a CMS using Flex and Coldfusion or PHP - Oct 14th 2008

Building a CMS with Flex, Coldfusion or PHP - by Matthew Wallace
At this meeting Matthew Wallace will show you two identical CMS applications that he built using Flex. One uses Coldfusion on the server and the other uses PHP.

If you have ever wanted to code a CMS for a web site and did not know where to start, Flex is the answer. It would be helpful for you guys to know a little bit if PHP or CF (just basic knowladge), but if you are totally new to using either then this presentation will be great for just about any of you.

Things that the CMS will show you how to do is, fill out a form and add the info to the MySQL DB, upload an image and have CF or PHP make a thumbnail and also store both images on the server and the name of the images will be added to the DB. Also Matthew will show you how the two different web sites are using the data. One is a PHP/HTML site and the other is a Flash based site.

Also we will be giving away some swag for the coming winter months so don’t miss out.

August 12 UG meeting - Open Mic night

Quick Change of Plans…..

Flex 3 Tips & Tricks
Rob been working with Flex for 5 years (started with the alpha) and have picked up a lot on the dozens of projects he has work on since. At this meeting, we’ll discuss working with advanced component building, skinning, history management, best practices and even architectures. If you are new to Flex, you don’t want to miss this meeting. If you a Flex veteran, he’d love for you to correct him and hopefully you’ll pick up a few things as well. At a minimum, there will be some great discussion.
The goal of user groups is to improve everyone’s skills, so we encourage you to attend this great meeting of the minds.

Swag, food and beverages will be provided, so please RSVP. Hmmm… what kind of swag? software? books? beer? You’ll have to attend to find out.

The summer months are almost over and the kids are starting back to school. I have been super busy with my new job at Remarkable Wit as well. I have not booked a presenter for the next meeting so in the spirit of this being a USER Group….. All you guys show up and we will chat about Flex. Ben Stucki maybe sharing some things that he has been working on as well. Ben may also have a friend of his come buy and show us some stuff as well. I will not name any names because he may or may not be in Nashville at the time.

Hope all of the normal users will come out and also hope to see some new faces too.

New User Group Meeting Location

Alright…… I am moving the meeting location of the Flex?Ǭ†user group. The guys at DealerSkins have been great hosts and I think that we may have a need to use there space from time to time. Especially for the larger events that we tend to have once a year or so but as many of you know I have a new job and the company I work for is going to allow me to use our office space to meetings.

This will be better for me personally as I have a key to the location and will not have to worry about getting in and the guys at DealerSkins always have to have someone there to lock up for us. This way I can get us in for a meeting whenever we like.

A HUGE THANKS AGAIN to DealerSkins and I hope you guys will please still support and come to meetings. We are not really moving to far from the DS location.

As for the new office, we are still moving in and having some work done but I think for now it will be perfect. Here is a front view of the office.

I may or may not have a need for a projector if someone could keep that in the back of there mind in case the need?Ǭ†arises.

Cairngorm Fundamentals Videos by Scot Clausing

Alright, our meeting on March the 11th 2008 was really cool but the Acrobat Connect recording didn’t work out so well, so Scot was kind enough to re-record and break the presentation down into separate videos for us.

At this presentation Scot started us on a series about the fundamentals of using Caingorm and MVC in Flex. I have to admit that this was a bit over my head and I had no desire to learn anything about Cairngorm, but I think once you listen to Scot explain it, I think you will catch on and may beside you would like to?Ǭ† start using this framework as part of your development strategy.

As you sharpen your Development skills you will find that OOP (Object Oriented Programing)?Ǭ† is a much better way to code your applications. You may or may not want to use Cairngorm for this but watching this series should give you a good idea of whether or not you would like to or not.

Check out the first part of Scot’s searies by going to this link. http://blog.tsclausing.com/cairngorm-series

Scot will be continuing his series at the next meeting of April 8th 2008 so brush up for that by watching the first part over the next few weeks.
