Last month I did a beginners guide to using Red5 Open Source FMS Server. Well I have “The Man” That will know way more about it than me lined up for our next meeting. This promises to be a great presentation.

Who is Chris Allan

With extensive experience developing for the Flash platform and Java, Chris Allen is a leader in the Open Source Flash community. Over the last 8 years he has been a software architect and developer for various companies including Cambridge Technology Partners, Mass General Hospital and Scholastic. Chris is currently president and CEO of Infrared5, a consulting firm built around services for Flash including the Open Source Red5 server and Papervision3D. He is also co-project manager and a Java developer for the Open Source Red5 project, as well as an author on an upcoming book on Open Source Flash development. You can read his blog at ff9900.org.

Project leader Chris Allen will walk us though building a Red5 application using the new Jedai Framework (http://jedai.googlecode.com). New User Group Meeting Location

Alright…… I am moving the meeting location of the Flex user group. The guys at DealerSkins have been great hosts and I think that we may have a need to use there space from time to time. Especially for the larger events that we tend to have once a year or so but as many of you know I have a new job and the company I work for is going to allow me to use our office space to meetings.

This will be better for me personally as I have a key to the location and will not have to worry about getting in and the guys at DealerSkins always have to have someone there to lock up for us. This way I can get us in for a meeting whenever we like.

A HUGE THANKS AGAIN to DealerSkins and I hope you guys will please still support and come to meetings. We are not really moving to far from the DS location.

As for the new office, we are still moving in and having some work done but I think for now it will be perfect. Here is a front view of the office.

I may or may not have a need for a projector if someone could keep that in the back of there mind in case the need arises.

Flash Player 10 Beta is out!

Flash Player 10 beta, code name Astro is out.

Using Cold Fusion with AIR

If you guys didn’t get to go to the Cold Fusion meeting it was really good. If you get a chance please have a look at the presentation when you get a chance. Pretty cool stuff.

The Presentation will basically show you how to set up your AIR project to be able to call Remote Objects in Cold Fusion. If you are not a Cold Fusion programmer I bet some of you savvy programmers out there could get this working with say AMF-PHP or some other AMF project like that.

Coder Resource Launched

Alright guys…… I launched a new web site yesterday. Some of you that are in my contacts list via gmail may have already gotten an invite so if you did then you can disregard this post.

First up thanks to all of you that make this user group possible. Without it I think my skills as a developer would not be where they are today for sure. In an effort to get more exposure in the languages that I develop in and also to allow for opportunities for you guys to teach, learn, and grow in the development community, I have started Coder Resource.

If you are sick of yet another Social Network I totally understand. My goal here is to leverage this site to open more opportunity for the local user groups and individual programmers that have not yet found a local community to be a part of. This may also open opportunities for meeting developers that are willing to come and teach us some new things or in the case of some of you that are really good at what you do….. you may find that other groups or businesses may want you to come and teach them some of your kick ass ninja coding skills !

The site is set up in a way where you can do a couple of things. There is a blogging feature so that you can write a small blurb and link back to your own site if you like or write a full blown article. I don’t really care as long as you 1. benefit from using it and 2. the community comes away with some little bit of info that helps them all. There is also a video feature for posting small clips if you like of something that you figured out. If you have a longer video tutorial I would encourage you to link to your own server if it is a fairly large file.

The other feature of the site that I like is you can set up your own group so if you do join and you don’t see a group for your specific language interest then please start a group. I have already set up a CF, Flex, and PHP group. I know some of you are .NET programmers and I am sure there are some other programming interests out there that I don’t know about.

Again thanks for taking the time and I hope this new site benefits you in some way. Let me know your thoughts and suggestions if you have any at all.

Cairngorm Fundamentals Videos by Scot Clausing

Alright, our meeting on March the 11th 2008 was really cool but the Acrobat Connect recording didn’t work out so well, so Scot was kind enough to re-record and break the presentation down into separate videos for us.

At this presentation Scot started us on a series about the fundamentals of using Caingorm and MVC in Flex. I have to admit that this was a bit over my head and I had no desire to learn anything about Cairngorm, but I think once you listen to Scot explain it, I think you will catch on and may beside you would like to start using this framework as part of your development strategy.

As you sharpen your Development skills you will find that OOP (Object Oriented Programing) is a much better way to code your applications. You may or may not want to use Cairngorm for this but watching this series should give you a good idea of whether or not you would like to or not.

Feb 12th, 2008: Thermo, Flex4 and MXMLG are slated to bring exciting new capabilities to Flex eventually, but what if you could use some of these new features in your projects today? At this months meeting, Ben will be demonstrating the Degrafa and OpenFlux frameworks. Degrafa is a declarative graphics framework (similar to MXMLG), which allows developers and designers to create rich, custom graphics without the need to know AS3 or the Flash graphics API. OpenFlux takes Degrafa a step further by introducing a new component model (similar to changes rumored to be in Flex4), which allows developers to create entirely new custom components with minimal effort.

Bio of presenter: Ben Stucki is an independent software developer in Nashville, TN. He might have had an average, every-day job selling retail electronics or installing cable, but he doesn’t. He designs and develops bleeding edge web applications using Flex 2, ActionScript 3, C#, HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Apparently he’s pretty good at it. He speaks at user group meetings just to rub it in.
